Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the buildup of fatty deposits (plaque) inside of the coronary arteries. Coronary arteries are the blood vessels that provide oxygen and other nutrients to the heart. Over time as plaque builds up the coronary arteries may harden and narrow (atherosclerosis) leading to reduced blood flow to the heart. Reduced blood flow to the heart can cause angina symptoms, such as chest pain or pressure, and if the plaque breaks apart, it can also cause a heart attack.
At Weill Cornell Medicine, our team of specialists includes leading experts in diagnostic imaging and advanced vascular procedures. They have extensive experience identifying and treating vascular conditions, with a particular focus on coronary artery disease. Each of our specialists is board-certified and highly trained in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.
Treatment Options
Patients with coronary artery disease may require an invasive evaluation (coronary angiograpy). Weill Cornell physicians routinely use intravascular imaging and/or flow-based physiologic evaluation to better understand which lesions noted on coronary angiography require further treatment. In addition to routine percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), all our doctors are comfortable with the use of ventricular support devices when necessary and some specialize in opening vessels that are chronically occluded (CTO).
