Cardio-Oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine
Heart Care Before, During and After Cancer Therapy
If you are receiving cancer treatment or are a cancer survivor, you may need special care for your heart.
Weill Cornell Medicine is one of a few medical centers in the U.S. with dedicated expertise in cardiovascular care for cancer (oncology) patients and survivors.
The Weill Cornell Medicine Cardio-Oncology Program helps patients live full, vibrant lives by protecting your quality of life and long-term heart function. Using the latest imaging technology and research, our doctors prevent heart damage, make efforts to detect any problems as early as possible and carefully manage your specific condition.
Why Choose Weill Cornell Medicine?
Individualized care: Our doctors’ priority is to enhance your quality of life and protect your heart function.
Your cardio-oncologist will first evaluate you closely and may recommend specific heart tests, such as blood tests or a cardiac MRI, to better understand your heart health. Your cardio-oncologist will then develop a personalized treatment plant for you based on your heart evaluation, cancer treatment plan, lifestyle goals and overall health.
Multidisciplinary care from leading experts: [P] When you choose Weill Cornell Medicine, you have access to a network of doctors and specialists. Your cardio-oncologist will work closely with your oncologist and other specialists throughout your cancer treatment and life as a survivo.
In addition to your cancer care team, you have the option to receive additional support and expert guidance from the physicians at the Weill Cornell Medicine Integrative Health and Wellbeing Program and Department of Psychiatry. You also have access to nutrition counseling, social work services, rehabilitation care and support groups.
Weill Cornell Medicine partners with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the top hospital system in New York City and the fourth top hospital system in the U.S.
Conditions We Treat
If you are receiving treatment for cancer — or a cancer survivor — you may be at higher risk for heart disease.
The Weill Cornell Medicine Cardio-Oncology Program helps you protect your heart from side effects so that you can complete your life-prolonging cancer therapy. Our team also helps manage your long-term heart health after you complete cancer treatment.
Advancements in cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, have significantly improved cancer survivorship rates. However, these treatments can cause heart damage or worsen a heart condition that existed before cancer treatment. (Cancer treatments’ cardiovascular risks and toxic effects on the heart are referred to as “cardiotoxicity.”)
Our team cares for patients — before and after cancer treatment — to prevent and treat:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Low blood pressure
- High cholesterol (dyslipidemia)
- Changes in heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- Damage to heart valves
- Blockages in the heart’s blood supply (coronary artery disease)
- Blockages in the blood supply of arms or legs (peripheral vascular disease)
- Inflammation of the heart (myocarditis or pericarditis)
- Weakening of the heart muscle (heart failure)
Treatment options may include:
- Lifestyle changes
- Medications
- Minimally invasive percutaneous treatments (a procedure in which the organs are accessed through small punctures in the skin)
- Minimally invasive surgical treatments
